What is a stitch-out video?

A stitch-out video is a simulation of an embroidery design being sewn: the needle lays down one stitch at a time, in the exact order the machine will follow, until the finished design appears. It is the digital equivalent of filming a machine running the design — except it takes seconds to make, needs no hooping, no thread and no machine time at all.

An embroidery file is not a picture. A DST, PES or JEF stores a long list of needle movements, jumps, trims and color changes — instructions, not pixels. That is why a design file cannot be opened in an image editor, and it is also why it can be animated so convincingly: the sewing order is already in the file. This tool reads that instruction stream and replays it, revealing the stitches progressively against a clean studio backdrop.

For anyone selling embroidery — digitizers, custom shops, design stores, machine dealers — that replay is the most effective single piece of content available. Choosing the right format and speed

Two settings decide how the clip reads. Here is how to pick them.

Video format: 9:16 or 16:9

9:16 vertical renders at 1080×1920 and fills a phone screen edge to edge. It is the default because that is where embroidery content performs — Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts all prioritise full-screen vertical video, and a landscape clip posted there sits in a small band with wasted space above and below.

16:9 horizontal renders at 1920×1080 and suits anything watched on a larger screen: a standard YouTube upload, a Facebook feed post, a product page embed, a slide in a client pitch or a loop playing on a screen at a trade stand. Wide designs also breathe better here than in a vertical frame.

Simulation speed: 1×, 0.5× or 0.25×

Speed controls how fast the stitches appear, and therefore how long the clip runs. 0.5× is the default and the right answer for most designs: slow enough that the eye can follow the needle through each section, fast enough that the design completes before attention drifts.

Drop to 0.25× for small or simple designs — a monogram or a single-color outline finishes too quickly at 0.5× to feel like a real stitch-out. Move up to for dense, high-stitch-count designs where the slower speeds would push the clip past what a feed will hold.

Putting your brand on every frame

Three fields control the branding, and all three are optional — but a clip that gets shared without them is a clip that markets nobody.

Company logo is drawn centred at the top of every frame, scaled to fit without stretching. A transparent PNG gives the cleanest result against the white studio background; a solid-background JPG will show its rectangle. If you leave it empty, the top of the frame stays clear and the design simply sits higher.

File nameis the design title shown in the lower corner, and it is also used to name the downloaded MP4 — so “Sunflower badge” becomes sunflower-badge-stitch-video.mp4 in your downloads folder rather than an unidentifiable string. It is pre-filled from the file you upload, and you can overwrite it.

Extra textis a single free line below the stitch count. It fades in at the halfway point rather than sitting there from the first frame, so it lands as a deliberate beat once the viewer is already watching. Use it for your handle, your website, a price, or a call to action — “@yourshop · custom digitizing from $15” does more work than a bare domain.

Alongside your text, every clip automatically shows the stitch count and color count read from the file. That detail is worth keeping: it is the information other embroiderers actually want, and it signals that the video came from a real design file rather than a mock-up.

Getting more out of every clip

Post it as a loop

Stitch-out clips loop cleanly because they end on the finished design and restart on an empty frame. Platforms count a replay as extra watch time, which helps the post.

Add sound in the app

The MP4 ships with a silent track so it uploads everywhere. Add a trending audio in Instagram or TikTok after uploading — native audio is favoured over baked-in music.

Batch a week in one sitting

Lead with the busiest design

Multi-color designs with lots of fill read better in the first second than a sparse outline. Save the minimal designs for 0.25×, where they get room to breathe.

Keep it under 30 seconds

Completion rate matters more than length on short-form platforms. If a design runs long at 0.5×, render it at 1× rather than letting it drift past the half-minute mark.

Check the pathing first

Watch the clip at 0.25× before posting. Long travels, odd fill directions and stray trims are obvious in motion and invisible in a still — fix them and re-render.
