What is a VP3 file?
A VP3 fileis the Viking / Pfaff version 3 embroidery format from VSM Group — the native format for modern Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff embroidery machines. It stores the stitch movements, jump stitches and color changes that guide the machine through a design, together with the design's real thread colors, a preview and metadata.
That richness is what sets VP3 apart from lean formats like DST and EXP: a single .vp3 carries everything the machine needs, including the colorway, so there is no separate color sheet to keep track of. It replaced the older .vip format, which is why you often see the two side by side.
Because a raw VP3 is binary stitch data, you cannot simply open it as an image. That is exactly what a viewer is for: our online VP3 viewer reads the file directly in your browser and reconstructs the design with a realistic, true-to-thread preview in its stored colors. You can inspect the stitch path, fine-tune any block, switch the simulated fabric, and read the design size and stitch count before sending it to your machine — no desktop digitizing software required.

Benefits
Why use our online VP3 viewer
Fast, free and private — built to help you check a Pfaff or Husqvarna Viking design before you commit thread to fabric.
Instant, in your browser
Your VP3 opens the moment you drop it in — there is no upload queue, no processing wait and no software to install before you can see the design.
Free with no login
View, measure and export as many VP3 files as you like without an account, a subscription or a watermark stamped across the preview.
Sees your real thread colors
Because a VP3 file stores its thread colors, the viewer opens the design in the palette the digitizer intended — then lets you fine-tune any block to the exact threads you'll sew with.
Know the size and stitch count
Read the exact design size in millimeters, total stitch count and color-change count straight from the VP3 stitch data to confirm it fits your hoop and garment.
Works on any device
The viewer runs entirely in the browser on desktop, tablet and phone — no plugins, no app store and no operating-system restrictions.
Estimate machine runtime
Enter your machine's stitches-per-minute and the viewer estimates how long the design will take to sew, so you can plan production and quote jobs accurately.
Supported machines
VP3 works across Viking, Pfaff and beyond
Native to Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff, opened by nearly every digitizing program, and convertible for any other machine.
Husqvarna Viking
VP3 is the native format for modern Husqvarna Viking machines, including the Designer and Epic series — designs load straight from a USB stick.
Pfaff
Pfaff creative and performance embroidery machines share the VP3 format, since both brands are made by VSM Group and use the same software ecosystem.
Commercial multi-head
For Tajima, Barudan, SWF and Ricoma heads that prefer DST, preview your VP3 here, then convert it so it runs on commercial machines.
Other machines & software
Most digitizing programs — Wilcom, Hatch, Embird, Ink/Stitch — open VP3, so designs you preview here import into nearly any embroidery setup.
Running a machine that expects DST or PES? Preview your design here, then use the DST ⇄ PES converter to export the format your machine needs.
Common problems
Troubleshooting & tips
Quick answers to the issues people hit most when opening and previewing VP3 files.
My file is a .vip, not a .vp3
VIP is the older Husqvarna Viking / Pfaff format that VP3 replaced. This viewer reads the modern .vp3 — if you only have a .vip, re-save it as VP3 in your embroidery software, or convert it first.
My file will not open in the viewer
Make sure it is a genuine embroidery .vp3 and starts with the VP3 magic bytes. Re-export a clean VP3 from your design software and try again.
The design looks smaller or larger than expected
The viewer reads the true size in millimeters from the stitch data. If it seems off, it was digitized at that size — check the measurements before hooping so it fits your garment.
The design stitches poorly after resizing
VP3 stores final stitch data, so scaling changes stitch spacing without regenerating stitches. Resize the original digitizing file instead, or have the design redigitized at the new size.
There are long jump lines across the design
Those are jump stitches between sections. Toggle jump stitches off to preview the finished look — your machine will trim and travel between sections as the digitizer intended.
VP3 viewer questions
VP3 is the Viking / Pfaff version 3 embroidery format from VSM Group, native to Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines. Unlike DST or EXP, it stores the design's real thread colors, a preview and metadata alongside the stitch data.

No. The viewer runs entirely in your web browser on desktop and mobile. Your file is parsed locally just to display it.
Yes. VP3 files store their thread colors, so the viewer opens the design with the palette the digitizer intended. You can still fine-tune any color block to match the exact threads you plan to sew with.
VIP is the older Husqvarna Viking / Pfaff format; VP3 is the newer, more capable version that replaced it with better thread-color and metadata support. This viewer reads the modern .vp3 format.
Yes. You can export the current preview as a high-quality PNG image, or download a branded PDF spec sheet that includes the design render along with stitch count, colors, size and total thread length.
Yes. The viewer is fully responsive and touch-friendly, so you can open, preview, measure and export VP3 files on a phone or tablet — no app to install.
VP3 is a rich Viking/Pfaff format that stores thread colors, a preview and metadata; DST is a lean Tajima format that stores stitches only and no colors. Both convert cleanly, but converting VP3 to DST drops the colors.
VP3 is native to modern Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff machines, and virtually every digitizing program can open it. For machines that expect DST, PES or JEF, convert the design first.
Only slightly. VP3 contains final stitch data, so scaling changes stitch spacing without adding or removing stitches. For significant size changes, resize the original digitizing file or have the design redigitized.
Jump stitches are travel moves the needle makes between separate parts of a design without stitching. The viewer lets you toggle them on or off so you can inspect the pathing, or preview the clean finished look without the jump lines.
Yes. Enter your machine's stitches-per-minute and the viewer estimates the machine runtime from the total stitch count, which is useful for planning production and quoting embroidery jobs.
No. When you drop a file into the viewer it is parsed locally in your browser purely to render the preview. The design is not sent to or stored on a server, so your files stay private.
